Scope and Content Locomotives, Tradeston Gas Works, No 95 Kilbirnie Street, Glasgow This shows the two locomotives which worked at Tradeston. The small one in front was built by Motor Rail in 1961, and had previously worked at Paisley Gas Works. The other was built by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co Ltd, also in 1971. These locomotives were used to shunt coal and coke wagons round the works, and also wagons serving the purifiers. The small locomotive was used after gas production had ceased to clear coke and the contents of the purifiers from the site. Tradeston Gas Works was founded in 1843 by the Glasgow City & Suburban Gas Co. It was later taken over by Glasgow Corporation Gas Department and rebuilt. After World War II a new vertical retort installation was built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
