Scope and Content Glasgow Corporation Water Works, Mugdock Reservoir, Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire In order to supply the city with pure water in adequate quantities for both domestic and industrial purposes Glasgow Town Council promoted a scheme to bring water from Loch Katrine in the Trossachs, with twin aqueducts to a service reservoir at Mugdock. This first phase was built between 1856 and 1859. This shows the gauge basins of the Mugdock Reservoir, where the water flows out of the 26-mile aqueduct tunnels into the reservoir. The curved masonry walls surround the tunnel mouths. The quantity of water entering the reservoir is measured or 'gauged' here. From Mugdock the water is piped into the city through seven miles of cast-iron pipes. The scheme has been enlarged on several occasions since its inception, and a second service reservoir, Craigmaddie Reservoir, constructed to the east, completed in 1896. The scheme still provides most of Glasgow's water. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
