Scope and Content Station Platform, Gourock Pier Railway Station, Kempock Point, Gourock, Inverclyde (now demolished) Gourock Pier Railway Station, considered to be the most advanced railway pier of its time, was designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, and built in 1889 as a major railway steamer interchange for the Caledonian Railway Company. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the station in 1890. This broad platform had iron columns supporting arched iron girders which, in turn, supported a saw-tooth glass roof. The walls bore elegant wrought-iron brackets carrying Victorian gas lamps, and signs indicating 'Refreshment Room' and 'Refreshment Room, First Class'. The large clock was an important feature of the Victorian station platform. The railways brought about the standardisation of time in Britain. Previously, local time could differ by several minutes or even by as much as half an hour in different parts of the country. The railways, working to a strict timetable of train departure and arrival times, ensured that all station clocks were standardised to the same time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
