Scope and Content Rubble base and timber outer structure, Turnhouse Airport, Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport in 1953, designed 1953-4 by architect Robert Matthew, and built 1954-6. The building was designed to be easily extended to deal with the growing number of air passengers, and new sections were added in 1959 and 1965. It ceased to operate for passenger flights in 1977 when Edinburgh Airport opened, and is now used for freight. This shows the lower part of the walls of the airport which are constructed from rubble blocks of various sizes fitted together to form an attractive random pattern. The upper part of the walls are covered by timber boards which have been painted brown. This airport consists of a number of flat and single-sloped roof buildings with the main concourse to the north, the customs area to the east and offices to the west. In 1965 a new customs area and link corridor provided a new main entrance to the complex, and the main building was used for outgoing travellers only. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
