Scope and Content Nave, Crathie Church, Aberdeenshire Crathie Church, a Gothic-style cruciform (cross-shaped) church which stands in a secluded rural setting above the River Dee, was designed by the architect, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, and built in 1893-5 as a place of public worship for the royal family when staying at Balmoral Castle. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1911. The nave is simple, with bare grey granite walls and a barrel-vaulted ceiling of Scotch pine. It is lit by pointed-arch traceried side windows, and by a large rose window set high in the west gable. At the intersection of nave and transepts (foreground), massive circular granite pillars support the arches bearing the church tower. Balmoral Castle has been the Scottish home of the royal family since it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852, having first been leased in 1848. The original castle was considered too small for the needs of the royal family and, under the supervision of Prince Albert, a new building was designed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
