Scope and Content Bernat Klein House from the north-west, High Sunderland, Scottish Borders High Sunderland was built 1956-7 for the textile designer and artist Bernat Klein (b.1922) to designs by the Yorkshire-born architect Peter Womersley (1923-93). The architect also designed a studio for Klein which was built in 1972. The house is built using frames measuring 2.43m by 2.43m, and features two separate areas: one for guests and children's bedrooms; and one for the master bedroom and main living area. The house also includes a carport, two terraces and a courtyard. The square panels which make up this house are clearly visible in this view of the entrance to the carport (drive-in covered parking area). To the right can be seen a mosaic panel designed by the owner, and behind this the windows to the master bedroom. Timber panels stained a rich brown can be seen to the left, with additional patterning provided by the horizontal bands of white painted woodwork. In building this house within a wooded area, the architect created a secluded family home with fine views from the huge plate glass windows. The house has a 'sunken' living room on a lower level with glass panels in the base of the walls to allow further views into the grounds. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
