Scope and Content Old Foundry, Lugiebank Road, Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire The Forth & Clyde Canal reached Kirkintilloch in the early 1770s, and was completed though to Maryhill in 1775. Kirkintilloch became very much a canal village, with foundries in particular drawing supplies of pig-iron and coke via the canal, and sending the castings out in the same way. This shows the Old Foundry from the north-east. The buildings in this view appear to date from the mid to late 19th century (left) and the mid 20th century. In the foreground is the route of the branch railway from Lenzie. With the route of the former foundry siding to the left of the buildings. This foundry was the first of several in the town, of which the Lion and the Star were the largest. The Lion lasted into the 1970s. All have now been demolished, and a relief road now crosses the site of this one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
