Scope and Content The Citizen Building (Printing Works), No 24 St Vincent Place, Glasgow This works was built in 1885-7 for James Hedderwick & Sons, publishers of the Glasgow Evening Citizen, contractors to H M Stationery Office, and general printers and publishers. The building was designed by T L Watson, architect, and was one of the first in the city centre to be built of red sandstone. This shows in the centre the street frontage of the building from the south-west, with its richly ornamented façade. To the left is the Clydesdale Bank Head Office, and to the right the headquarters of the Anchor Line. The Citizen building was in 1969 occupied as commercial offices. This building, like other newspaper offices of the period, was sited to use men and boys to distribute newspapers through the city centre, and to send bundles of papers by rail to newsagents further afield. This office was close to Queen Street Station, and not far from the other city-centre terminals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
