Scope and Content Access ramp in Phase I, Town Centre from the south-west, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows one of the covered concrete ramps which allow pedestrian access to the multi-functional Town Centre. The floors are tiled, and the concrete walls and ceilings have a ridged plank decorative texture. An important and innovative part of the design of the Town Centre was that pedestrians and cars should be kept separate. To achieve this, ramps were installed to protect people on foot from the busy roads around the building. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
