Scope and Content The Elms from the south, Cairnie Road, Arbroath, Angus The Elms, a French Gothic-style villa, was built for Provost Corsar of Arbroath between 1864 and 1866 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). The house was used as a children's home until the mid-1980s, and is now in private ownership. On the left is a multi-angled bay with conical roof and to the right is an advanced bay with a low balustrade and gable at first-floor level. The ground-floor windows have a variety of arched surrounds, some divided by columns. The entrance porch with its arched doorway can also be seen on the right. This house with its French Gothic details has an interior richly decorated with painted ceilings, carved stone angels, stained glass and tiled fireplaces. These fine decorative details show the influence of Leiper's friend William Burges (1827-81), a leading figure in the Victorian Gothic Revival. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
