Scope and Content First-Floor Corridor, Union Bank of Scotland, Nos 110-20 St Vincent Street, Glasgow (now the Bank of Scotland) The Union Bank of Scotland, the head office of the bank in Glasgow, was designed in 1925-7 in an American Classical style by the Glasgow architect, James Miller. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1927. This corridor has a marble floor laid in an elongated geometric pattern of contrasting coloured bands. Behind the wooden partitioning are the offices of the directors and other bank officials, and at the far end, a stairwell with a built-in electric elevator. In November 1927 the Prince of Wales visited the bank's new premises. After taking tea with the directors, meeting the architect and the principal contractors, he made a tour of inspection, remarking on the similarity of many of the building's features with the structure of bank buildings in America.
