Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. This photograph of the entrance hall of the building was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall, with its low ceiling and fine oak panelling, reflects the opulence of a first-class steamship saloon. The ceiling and frieze have exuberant 18th-century style plasterwork with wreaths, modillions and swagged fruit, and a model of one of the company's steamships is displayed in a glass case (left). In 1907 Miller was also commissioned by the Cunard Shipping Company as consultant architect for the SS Lusitania, one of the world's great steamships, and designed the ship's sumptuous interiors. During World War I the Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk while crossing the Atlantic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
