Scope and Content First-floor Office, Anchor Line Building, Nos 12-16 St Vincent Place, Glasgow The Anchor Line Building, designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, was built in 1905-7 for the Anchor Line Shipping Company. This photograph of a first-floor office in the building was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This small room is free of the elaborate decoration found in the ground-floor offices. The walls are hung with pictures of the company's steamships, with a picture of the building itself over the fireplace. It is lit by a simple but elegant electric light fitting, and a contemporary telephone sits on the desk. The Anchor Line specialised in 'emigrant shipping', operating twice weekly sailings from Glasgow to New York and Quebec. Passengers, depending on what they could afford, travelled across the Atlantic in large, elegant mail-steamers in first-, second- or third-class accommodation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
