Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows the two-storey finishing block, with on the right the engine house for the main driving engine by Douglas and Grant of Kirkcaldy. The finishing block housed calenders and mangles which were used to close up the texture of the cloth before it was made up into sacks and bags. The main Douglas and Grant driving engine was kept as a standby in 1969, and was still in good condition, It was scrapped in about 1970. A second engine drove dynamos to supply electricity to the mill. The third engine had been used to drive machinery directly, but was disused. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
