Scope and Content Landale, Craigend Road, Troon, South Ayrshire This photograph of Landale, Troon, was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after the house was completed. The villa was designed by Balfour Abercrombie in a splendid setting overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The house is harled with a steeply pitched roof and tile-hung eaves. The first-floor balcony was designed to take advantage of the sea views, and provides a colonnaded shelter below for watching croquet (left) or tennis (right) on the front lawn. In 1840 a railway connection opened from Troon to Glasgow. The town then began to gradually develop as a popular spot for wealthy Glaswegians to build large villas overlooking the Ayrshire coast, and indulge in the increasingly fashionable sport of golf.
