Scope and Content Hill Square Extension Museum (now the Jules Thorn Museum), Royal College of Surgeons, Surgeons' Hall, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh Surgeons' Hall was designed in 1829-32 by William Henry Playfair for the Royal College of Surgeons. The building was extended in 1908-9 by the architect, Balfour Paul, to incorporate a new museum hall which was photographed c.1909 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall has a gallery lined with piers with Ionic capitals, echoing Playfair's Classical design for the building's original anatomy hall. The display cases are designed to house a surgical collection illustrating Edinburgh's rich medical history. Exhibits include a wallet made from the skin of the notorious murderer, William Burke (1792-1829), and items belonging to famous surgeons such as the pioneer of obstetric surgery, James Young Simpson (1811-70).
