Scope and Content Detail of the hammerbeam roof in the ballroom, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1800, and altered 1905-10 by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914) to include a ballroom and service wing. The house has distinctive twin towers, white harled walls, and forms a square with a central court. This shows one of the roof supports in the ballroom. The hammerbeam resting on a stone corbel has been carved to represent the head of an eagle, and the brace below bears a design of wheat. Vine scrolls form a cornice running around the room. This hammerbeam roof is built following a traditional construction technique, often used in churches. The hammerbeam lessens the span of the roof beams, allowing shorter timbers to be used. The ends of hammerbeams are often carved, usually with angels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
