Scope and Content View from east of library, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House, built c.1800, is a large two-storeyed house with a distinctive arrangement around a courtyard. Originally a U-plan house, it was altered and decorated 1905-10 by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914) to its present form. This shows the library with its carved wooden fire-surround and small fireplace within. The room is half-panelled in varnished wood, and the ceiling features prominent beams. The central bookcase has glass doors to protect its contents from dust. This library looks rather empty without its furnishings. The fireplace would have had comfortable chairs around it, and the shelves would be stock with fine leather-bound and gilt-tooled volumes. The room expresses the wealth and learning of its owner.
