Scope and Content View from south-east of Crown House, Nos 10-14 Crown Avenue, Inverness Crown House was built c.1815. In the mid-19th century two large wings were added creating a U-plan composition. The rear of the houses features a triple bowed centre. The west wing (left) was demolished in 1978 creating an L-plan structure. This shows Crown House with both its bays intact. The house is built of rubble masonry with rusticated quoins, or corner stones. The central building has a fine pilastered doorpiece, and painted margins to the windows. Dormers light the attic rooms. This house, also known as Abertarff House, was the townhouse of the wealthy Frasers of Abertarff in the 19th century. It would have been home to a large family, and their servants before being divided into three smaller houses at a later date. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
