Scope and Content Detail of stencilled decoration and 'Lincrusta' wallcoverings on the staircase wall, Grange House, No 22 York Road, Edinburgh Grange House was built c.1820 and is a fine two-storeyed, three bayed Classical Italianate villa. It is constructed of smooth ashlar masonry to the front, with rubble masonry sides and back. The façade features a Doric portico and trellised balcony. This shows a stencilled wall decoration and 'Lincrusta' wallcoverings on the staircase. A wooden dado divides up the wall. The colourful stencil in angular floral motifs contrasts with the Gothic motifs found in the white-painted Lincrusta below. Lincrusta is a linoleum-like wallcovering which is very hard-wearing. It was invented in 1877 and its name comes from the Latin words 'linum' (flax, from which is obtained linseed oil, an ingredient in the product) and 'crusta' (meaning hard shell).
