Scope and Content Newcraighall Colliery, Edinburgh This colliery was sunk in 1898 by the Niddrie & Benhar Coal Co, and originally produced manufacturing and house coal, and shale for oil production. Originally there were two shafts, but by 1968 one had been replaced by a drift. This shows the left--hand side of the winding engine for the surviving shaft, looking towards the drum, which is the original cast iron one of 1903. The engine was built by Grant, Ritchie & Co Ltd, Kilmarnock. The drum has been fitted with Barclay steam brakes. This colliery was closed in 1968, and abandoned in 1970, the surface buildings being demolished. It was one of several pits in Midlothian and East Lothian owned by Lanarkshire companies. The engine was dismantled carefully and partly re-erected at the Prestongrange Mining Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
