Scope and Content Keiss, Caithness, Highland The village of Keiss is located on Sinclair's Bay in north-east Caithness, between Wick and John O'Groats. It is a small farming and fishing village with a long association with the Sinclair Clan who built the first castle in the late 16th-early 17th-century. Keiss was also the site of the first Baptist church in Scotland built in 1638. This view shows the village and harbour. The harbour was built of local flagstone in 1831. A large, 3-storeyed warehouse of 19th century date is located alongside the harbour. To the right of this is a small vaulted ice-house with a gabled entrance. A series of stone built fishermen's houses are located above the harbour. Above the main road (upper right) are the overgrown remains of the Iron Age (100 BC - 100 AD) settlement of Road Broch (also known as Kirk Tofts). Brochs are circular dry-stone towers and are exclusive to Scotland. Excavated in 1893 by Sir Francis Tress Barry, finds from the broch included pots, bone and stone implements and sherds of pottery, including a fragment of 2nd century AD Roman Samian ware.
