Scope and Content Auditorium, the McEwan Hall, Teviot Place, Edinburgh The McEwan Hall was designed in 1875 by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson for Edinburgh University, and completed in 1897. This photograph of the hall's magnificent auditorium was taken in c.1897 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall is D-plan, with a shallow apse containing an organ in a Baroque case in the straight side. Two tiers of balustraded galleries behind giant arcades carry the half-dome of the roof. The opulent painted decoration represents the academic virtues. The plan of the hall was based on the form of the ancient Greek theatre as this, according to the architect, was 'best suited for an auditorium and one likely to give good acoustic results'. It was used for university ceremonies, concerts and recitals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
