Scope and Content Redfern Ltd, Ladies' Tailors, Nos 31-2 Princes Street, Edinburgh The new premises of Messrs Redfern, Ladies' Tailors, opened in Princes Street in 1893. The building, designed by the architect, Sir George Washington Browne, was photographed by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This Victorian Gothic building has an array of architectural detailing. An elaborate balcony at first-floor level bears a sign, 'Redfern, Artists in Ladies' Dress', and the royal crest above the door signifies 'appointment to Her Majesty Queen Victoria'. Redfern Ltd, a firm of ladies' tailors that provided a made-to-measure service for wealthy clients, were specially appointed by the Royal Household to provide goods and services, and may have served Queen Victoria when she stayed at Holyrood Palace.
