Scope and Content Leading Light, Ayr Harbour, South Ayrshire Ayr Harbour appears to have developed along the south bank of the River Ayr in the 17th century, and to have been extended by quays on the north bank in the 18th century. These quays seem to have been rebuilt in the mid-19th century, and a wet dock was added in 1874-8 on the north side. This shows the small cast iron leading light on the east side of the entrance to the wet dock, from the east towards the harbour entrance. This light was probably installed when the dock was built, and with the light from an earlier lighthouse set back from the entrance formed a pair of leading lights. The earlier lighthouse, known as the High Light, was built in 1841, and marked the then entrance to Ayr Harbour. Both lights are still in service, and performing the function for which they were adapted in 1874-8. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
