Scope and Content Alloway Mill, South Ayrshire This was a large water-powered corn mill, the shell of which was probably rebuilt in the early 19th century, when high corn prices during the Napoleonic Wars encouraged millers to re-equip. It was again rebuilt in 1903, when new milling machinery was installed. This shows the internal low-breast waterwheel running, though it was not in regular use. It is in the middle of the mill, and may have replaced two narrower wheels driving two sets of millstones. This iron-framed wheel drove four pairs of stones through bevel gearing. The gearing survived in 1966. Bevel gear drive was rare in Scottish mills. This installation was made by Davies & Sneid, mill furnishers, Hull. The stones had been removed by 1966, and the mill was used as a store by McGill & Smith, seed merchants. It has since been converted into housing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
