Scope and Content Turnberry Hotel, Turnberry, Ayrshire, from the south-west Turnberry Hotel, built in 1904-6 near the small village of Turnberry on the Clyde coast, was designed by James Miller for the Glasgow & South Western Railway Company, and photographed shortly after opening by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hotel stands on a prominent site with magnificent views overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Its long, Neo-Georgian entrance front contains all the principal rooms on the ground floor, and the billiards room in the three-bayed block to the south (right). James Miller had been staff architect to the Caledonian Railway Company in 1888, and set up his own practice in Glasgow in 1893. His hotel work included Peebles Hydro in c.1908, and sketch plans for auxiliary housing at Gleneagles Hotel in 1920. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
