Scope and Content Turnberry Hotel, Turnberry, Ayrshire, from the north west Turnberry Hotel, built in 1904-6 near the small village of Turnberry on the Clyde coast, was designed by James Miller for the Glasgow & South Western Railway. This photograph of the hotel complex was taken in 1906 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The huge hotel complex stands in a magnificent position overlooking the Firth of Clyde. It was designed with long Neo-Georgian symmetrical facades, and the style is continued through the numberless buildings which spread out northwards from the hotel. Turnberry's main claim to fame was that it became home to the first purpose-built golf resort in Scotland, with two courses among the sand dunes by the shore. The Turnberry club was founded in 1902, and the courses were constructed to championship level. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
