Scope and Content Harbour-master's Office, Bowling Harbour, Forth & Clyde Canal, West Dunbartonshire The first part of this harbour was built in the late 1810s by the Forth & Clyde Canal Co to facilitate the interchange of traffic between canal and the River Clyde. A lock was built to give direct access from the harbour to the canal. The harbour itself was subsequently altered and extended. This shows the harbour-master's office, supported on wooden piles in front of the north quay wall. To the right are some of the 'starlings' on the southern edge of the harbour, with mooring bollards on top. The quay wall in the foreground appears to be part of the works completed in about 1820. This harbour was in minimal use by the 1960s. The western part was for many years used for laying up Clyde pleasure steamers during the winter, but this practice ended in the 1940s. The harbour is still used for mooring small craft, though much of it is derelict. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
