Scope and Content Customs house and canal office, Bowling Harbour, Forth & Clyde Canal, West Dunbartonshire This building was constructed, probably for the opening of this section of the Forth & Clyde Canal in 1790, for the collection of canal dues, and for the payment of customs charges for vessels and their cargoes entering of leaving the canal, which joins the River Clyde at this point. This shows the building from the south, with part of the lower basin in the foreground. Note the Royal Arms on the left side of the building, marking its use as a custom house. Behind the building is part of the viaduct and swing bridge carrying the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway over the canal. The use of this building as a custom house ended in 1962, when the Forth & Clyde Canal was closed to through navigation, but it continued in use as a canal office, as the Bowling basins remained in use as yacht and houseboat berths. The canal reopened in 2001 as part of the Millennium Link project. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
