Scope and Content Central Station Railway Bridge, Glasgow This bridge was built for the Caledonian Railway in 1876-8 to designs by Blyth & Cunningham, engineers, Edinburgh, the contractors being Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd. It had three main spans, with shorter approach spans over roads on each side. This shows the southernmost spans during the demolition of the structure, looking across the deck of Glasgow Bridge. The arched ties between the bridge sides are replacements for the original bowed-truss ties at the level of the tops of the main girders. This original bridge became redundant following re-signalling of Central Station and its approaches, and was demolished in 1966-7, leaving only the pairs of granite-clad piers and the cast-iron arches linking each pair. Traffic is now handled by the new bridge built between 1899 and 1903. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
