Scope and Content Memorial stone, Kirkmadrine Church, Whithorn, Wigtownshire The origins of Christianity in Scotland are found in Galloway. Bishop Ninian is thought to have arrived in the first half of the 5th century and may have been invited by an existing Christian community. He built a church, known as Candida Casa. Found at Whithorn, this memorial stone dating to the fifth century is inscribed in Roman capitals and reads 'We praise thee as Lord! Erected by Latinus, aged 35, and his daughter. Here the descendants of Barrovad made the monument (to them)'. Supporting the later traditions of Ninian's activities at Whithorn, this inscribed stone is one of the earliest Christian monuments in Scotland. Other stones inscribed with Christian symbols survive at Kirkmadrine, also in western Galloway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
