Scope and Content Clachnaharry Railway Swing Bridge, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Highland The first bridge on this site was designed by Joseph Mitchell for the Inverness & Ross-shire Railway and opened in 1862. The Highland Railway replaced it in 1909 by the present structure, a steel version of the 1862 bridge. It spans the Caledonian Canal, and is now electrically operated. This shows the bridge from the north-west. It is of plate girder construction, with double-web side members. The bridge is painted white to reduce thermal expansion in sunny weather. Towards the left is the handwheel which still turned the bridge in 1965. The approaches to the bridge from both sides of the railway, and from the north side of the canal, were controlled by semaphore signals, the railway ones operated from a small signal cabin on the west side of the bridge. One of the railway signals is on the left in this view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
