Scope and Content West footbridge, Firhill Basins, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow These basins were formed in 1788 and extended in 1849. They were constructed for the storage of floating timber, imported from Scandinavia and kept in water until needed for sawing into planks. Some of this timber was made up into rafts and floated through the canal. This shows the light footbridge at the west end of the narrow curved island separating the two basins. The figures on the bridge are Ian Donnachie (left) and John Butt, pioneers of Scottish industrial archaeology. In the background is part of the Firhill Iron Works of Shaw & McInnes Ltd. These basins had been disused for many years in 1965. The footbridges have been removed, and the island is now treated as a nature reserve. It is used as a nesting site by waterfowl.
