Scope and Content Calder Cabinet Works and Viewfield Cabinet Works, Main Street and Calder Street, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire Furniture manufacture became an important industry in Beith and Lochwinnoch from the 1860s and the 1880s respectively, replacing textiles as a major employer. This was the larger of the two Lochwinnoch works, and was opened in 1880 by James Hunter & Sons. This shows the factory from the north. The L-plan block on the right was probably the 1880 works, and the yellow brick block probably dated from about 1900. The small building adjacent to the 1880 block appears to have been an engine house. The impetus to found these concerns was two-fold: the development of effective machinery to produce components of furniture which had previously been made by hand; and a rise in real wages, which resulted in burgeoning demand for furnishings, not only for houses, but also for ships and hotels.
