Scope and Content Slatefield (Crown) Brewery, Slatefield Street, Glasgow This small brewery was built in 1881-4 for Gillespie, Gray & Co, brewers, to designs by P L Henderson, engineer and architect, Edinburgh, who specialised in the design of breweries and public houses. This shows the brewery from the north, with the brew house and its chimney the most prominent feature. The buildings were grouped round a courtyard, a common arrangement in small breweries. The buildings were built of red and white brick, characteristic of the period. This firm started business in the Gallowgate in 1872, and moved to this newly-built brewery in 1881, adding maltings in 1884. They specialised in brewing stout and porter. Like most small breweries this one eventually succumbed to competition from larger brewers. The building has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
