Scope and Content Hand crane, East Old Dock, Leith, Edinburgh Leith's role as the port of south-eastern Scotland was greatly enhanced by the construction in 1800-6 of the first of a pair of large wet docks designed by John Rennie. A second followed, to the west, in 1811-17. This shows a hand crane at the east end of a range of single-storeyed transit sheds along the south side of the East dock. The crane is of all-metal construction, suggesting a late 19th-century date. The wood and cast iron construction of the transit shed is typical of Leith Docks. The East and West Docks were filled in in the late 1960s, but these transit sheds survived for some time. The area has now been redeveloped with the actual site of the docks now being a car park.
