Scope and Content Water Tower and Signal Box, Wemyss Private Railway, East Wemyss, Fife This railway was built c.1900 to connect several collieries belonging to the Wemyss Coal Co Ltd with the harbour at Methil which belonged to the Wemyss family. The railway escaped the nationalisation of both the railways and the coal mines in 1947-8, and remained independent until it closed in 1970. This shows a water tower for supplying water to the steam locomotives which worked the line until its closure. The tanks were originally 'egg-ended' boilers from a colliery. Note that two sets of pipes allowed two locomotives to be watered at once. On the right is a signal box. This railway was badly hit in 1967 by an underground fire in the Michael Pit at East Wemyss, the source of much of its traffic. When the Lochhead Pit closed in 1970 the railway closed with it.
