Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows the interior of the boiler shop, which has two aisles, each of which had its own overhead crane. The cylindrical columns are unique to Cowlairs Works, in Scottish practice. The roof trusses are also unusual. These cylindrical columns were also found in the erecting shop, which was a similar but longer building. The reason for adopting these, rather than the webbed stanchions most commonly used in heavy engineering shops, is not known. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
