Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows the works general office from the south-west, with the tinsmiths' shop to the left. The works manager's office is on the right. The character of these buildings suggests that they were built in the late 1860s, after the North British Railway made Cowlairs its central workshops. The works continued to repair steam locomotives until the mid-1960s, but was not adapted to deal with diesel or electric rolling stock and locomotives. The former Caledonian Railway works at St Rollox was chosen for that work, and when its conversion was complete in 1968 Cowlairs was closed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
