Scope and Content Iron-smelting Furnace, Craleckan Ironworks, Furnace, Argyll & Bute This furnace was built in 1755 by the Argyle Furnace Company, a partnership formed by the Duddon Furnace Co of Cumbria. It was built to use charcoal made from local woods to smelt ore imported from Cumbria. The iron made was then exported to England. This shows what was originally a shed for storing charcoal for use in the furnace. The rounded corrugated iron roof is a 20th-century modification, as are the doorways cut in the end wall. The charcoal was loaded into the shed at the far end. Charcoal could only be made in the summer, so it was stored here to keep the furnace in operation during the winter. The works closed in 1812, and most of it then fell into decay. It was, however so well built that the masonry was still mostly intact in the 1960s, and it was consolidated by the Ministry of Works (now Historic Scotland) in the 1970s.
