Scope and Content Weaving Factory, No 11 Graham Square, Glasgow This factory was built in about 1825 for G Grant Junior for the power-loom weaving of cotton. It was one of the earliest large power-loom weaving factories in the east end of Glasgow. It was used as a weaving factory until the 1880s, and then became a corset, umbrella and shirt factory. This shows the factory from the south-east, after the demolition of the tenement in front. The building was of fairly slight construction, with slender cast iron columns supporting light timber floors. Iron tie-rods ran across the building at floor level and the tie plates can be seen in this view. The vogue for multi-storeyed power-loom weaving factories was short-lived, and by the early 1860s new factories were being built on the single-storeyed, north-lit principle. This one was latterly disused above ground-floor level, and was demolished in the late 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
