Scope and Content Harland & Wolff's Govan Shipyard, Clydebrae Street, Govan Road and Water Row, Glasgow This yard occupied the site of three smaller yards, including two which had belonged to Robert Napier. Harland & Wolff of Belfast purchased the site in 1912, and laid out a new yard. This was the first part of the firm's expansion on the River Clyde. This shows the Water Row frontage of the platers' shop, a steel-framed building of considerable size, linked with the berths on the other side of the street by both standard- and narrow-gauge tramways. The small doors lead to the time offices where the men 'clocked in' to start their shifts. The yard closed in 1963, and the main Govan Road building and berths were cleared in 1965. This shed was demolished in the early 1970s. Housing has now been built on the site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
