Scope and Content Dawsholm Gas Works, Skaethorn Road, Glasgow Originally equipped with horizontal retorts, standard at that time, but rebuilt several times, and latterly with vertical retorts, this gas works was established in 1871-2 by Glasgow Corporation Gas Department. This shows two blocks of workers' houses in Skaethorn Road, opposite the entrance to the works. These were probably built when the works was established, to house supervisors. When the works was built it was on the edge of settlement in the area. The works had stopped manufacturing coal gas by 1967 and the site was largely cleared in 1968. These houses have now completely disappeared. Skaethorn Road has been re-routed, and there are now houses on the site of the works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
