Scope and Content Hurlford Motive Power Depot, Hurlford, Ayrshire (South Ayrshire council area) This motive power depot provided steam locomotive servicing facilities for the whole of central Ayrshire, and replaced an earlier depot in the centre of Kilmarnock. It had its own railway housing, though this had gone by 1966. This view shows the exterior of the locomotive shed at the depot, of a standard Glasgow and South Western Railway design, with arched openings in the gable for ventilation. Note also the full-length roof-ridge ventilator. Hurlford motive power depot closed in 1967, and was demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
