Scope and Content United Co-operative Baking Society's bakery, Adelphi Street, McNeil Street, Ballater Street and Moffat Street, Glasgow This very large bakery was built 1886-1916 to supply bread and other bakery products to the thriving retail co-operative movement in greater Glasgow. The first section was in McNeil Street, and it eventually occupied a whole block. This shows the works from the south-east, showing the Ballater Street frontage, and part of the McNeil Street frontage. Note the elaborate treatment of the brickwork, in the Flemish manner. The block on the corner of McNeil and Ballater streets was the first part of the complex to be built, in 1886. The Ballater Street frontage was completed in 1895-6. The architects for the whole complex were Bruce & Hay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
