Scope and Content Lancefield Engine Works, No 181 Lancefield Street, Glasgow The oldest building in this complex, dating from 1821, was the office of Robert Napier's Lancefield Engine Works. From 1912, this complex was developed as the diesel engine works of Harland & Wolff Ltd. This shows the eastern end of the works, between Warroch and Hydepark streets, from the south-west. The taller brick buildings were steel-framed workshops designed by Sir William Arrol & Co, and the lower buildings probably part of Napier's works. The London & Glasgow Engineering & Iron Shipbuilding Co, acquired the Lancefield works from William Beardmore & Co in 1905, and re-equipped it. The middle block in this view was probably built for them, and the eastern one for Harland & Wolff. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
