Scope and Content St Enoch Station, St Enoch Square, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) The first part of this large station was completed to a temporary terminus at Dunlop Street in 1870. The main station with its dramatic arched roof was completed in 1876, and the hotel and offices in 1879. It was extended to the south in 1898-1902. This view shows the interior of the original station of 1876, looking north east. The lightness of the ribbed arched roof, designed by John Fowler and JF Blair, is obscured by soot from steam locomotives. The station was closed to rail traffic in 1966, and was used for a number of years as a car park before being replaced by the St Enoch Centre, a shopping mall with, curiously, a glazed overall roof.
