Scope and Content Custom House, Forth and Clyde Canal, Bowling, Dunbartonshire (West Dunbartonshire council area) This section of the Forth and Clyde Canal was the last to be completed, and was designed by Robert Whitworth and opened in 1790. This is the Custom House and canal and harbour office which controlled access to the canal from the river Clyde. This view shows a detail of the front of the building from the west, with a casting of the Royal Arms to the left of the lamp standard. The glass in the gas lamp was red, with clear lettering. This building continued in use after the closure of the main line of the canal in 1962, but ceased to be used as an office after c1970. It was being refurbished as part of the Millennium Link project in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
