Scope and Content View from east of Queen Mary Street, Bridgeton-Dalmarnock Comprehensive Development Area (CDA), Glasgow Queen Mary Street was built between 1976 and 1987 as part of the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR) scheme. These four-storeyed flats have shared access stairs and balconies, the modern equivalent of the tenement close. This photograph shows the four-storeyed flats arranged in groups. The flats have contrasting coloured string-courses to make the divisions of each floor, pitched roofs, and iron balconies. They have small gardens with railings. Bridgeton was once a weaving village, and Dalmarnock a centre for dyeing and farming. By the 19th century the area was full of tenement blocks, which have now been demolished. In 1962 the area was declared a Comprehensive Development Area (CDA). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
